Book Club Active Reading

My students need markers, sticky notes, and note cards for active reading during spring self-selected book clubs.

My Students

My classroom is a place where I encourage reading. I want students to be life-long learners, and I believe reading is the way to ignite this process. Our classroom is like a second home for us where we learn and grow together.

We live in a high poverty area where a large portion of our student body k-12 is on free or reduced lunch.

By the time students reach me, many of them have jobs or are caring for younger siblings. My students need the reading motivation of selecting a text that fits their interests and needs.

My Project

These materials will allow my students to create interactive notebooks for literature texts. In addition the post-its will help with collaborative reading and writing. I use them for students to leave messages for each other about their writing and for pre-writing and sharing ideas. The markers and note cards will allow students to record ideas as they read.

The supplies will help us work in groups to read and discuss a novel of the groups' choice in a book club.

Like adult book clubs we will make notes of interesting things in the text, ask questions, and share with each other. The goal of this project to get students invested in reading through a real-life reading format.
