My Project
As a proud educator at a Title I middle school serving predominantly black and brown students, I know how powerful it is for young people to see themselves reflected in the pages of a book. My students come from diverse backgrounds, rich with culture, resilience, and dreams. They deserve access to stories that honor and reflect their lived experiences.
Unfortunately, many of the books currently on our shelves do not reflect the diversity of the students in our classroom.
Representation matters, and when students read books by authors who look like them and write about lives similar to theirs, it validates their voices, nurtures empathy, and builds a love for reading.
Through this project, I am requesting a variety of high-interest books by multicultural authors; stories that celebrate identity, explore culture, and open up discussions about the world we live in. Authors like Jason Reynolds, Elizabeth Acevedo, Angie Thomas, Pam Muñoz Ryan, Jacqueline Woodson, and others offer powerful narratives that will inspire, empower, and connect with my students.
Your donation will help me fill our classroom library with books that reflect the beauty and brilliance of the students I teach. These texts won’t just improve literacy skills, they’ll help my students feel seen, valued, and heard.
Thank you for believing that every student deserves to see themselves in a story.
