This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How do you know when a book is "Just Right" for you? How do you make sure you can find that book again? Do you have some favorite books that you read over and over and over again?
My students have an amazing love of reading.
More than once I've said, "It's time to clean up and go home!" and they say, "Already? We're reading!"
Our school serves a diverse population of high-poverty students. Many of my students come from families that do not have many books in the home - let alone books that are "Just Right" for their reading ability.
Recently, I noticed that my students have been collecting their favorite books to keep for the next time we do reading. I had a few old boxes that they could use - but they are too small to hold many of our books and are getting cracked with age.
I'd like to give them new bins to hold their favorite books for reading.
My Project
I am requesting plastic book bins for each student. These will be their individual bin to hold the books that are on their reading ability. They can then move around the room with the books and read independently.
Research says that to become a better reader you must read. I'm looking forward to having the children be able to read with these bins!
My goal is for my classroom to become a place of passionate reading.
This project is so important to me because when I was a student I struggled with reading and truly hated it.
I feel like if my teachers had given me the tools I needed, that met my abilities, I would have been a much more prolific reader as a child.
