I am a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district and my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the daily challenges, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with a learning experience that is creative and meaningful .
My students are highly motivated, active, and love hands-on learning.
They like to move and dance, they love to read, and LOVE lots of positive attention. The majority of them are on a free/reduced lunch based on their socioeconomic status. From the moment they walk in I'm like their "school mom" and make sure that they are well-taken care of from having a snack to our school providing weekend food so they are not going hungry during that time. From the minute they walk in the door, I focus on providing them with a cohesive learning environment where they feel welcomed and loved. I may not be able to control on what happens at home, but I can control what happens during the school day. By doing this in a fun, entertaining, and positive way, I hope that I can instill a love of learning for a lifetime.
My Project
These books bins will help my students in the classroom when trying to social distance themselves amongst their peers. We used to have a communal books bin for each team of tables, but now this cannot feasibly happens during this time. These bins will house each individual student’s books so that no one else will touch their books but themselves. It will be easy to disinfect these books when they are finished as well since they are individually housed in their own bin. I will be able to go in and wipe the books down when finished to place back into the classroom library area.
