Book Bags for Budding Readers

My Students

I am blessed to teach an amazing group of learners. They inspire me each day with their desire to learn how to read. They devour each new book that I introduce. Their eyes sparkle as I read to them. They are the reason I come to work each day and do my personal best.

My students have a love for great books and desperately want to read them on their own as "real readers".

In an effort to provide the best literacy instruction for each of my students, we have been slowly acquiring appropriate leveled books for them to read. We have been working hard to purchase additional books, but individual student book bags have taken a back seat to the book purchases. Our current book bags that are over 5 years old and many are falling apart. If you know a kindergartner, you can imagine the heavy, daily use these bags get!

My Project

My students use specially leveled books so that each child is learning at their own pace and is challenged during our reader's workshop time. Kindergartners have a wide variety of experiences and needs for literacy. Individual book bags are essential to their identity as a reader. My students can pick out "just right" books for themselves and choose books that interest them. These books are housed in the bags for daily use. Students take charge of their learning and care for their own resources. Creating this sense of independence and ownership helps create a solid foundation for reading, which supports all other subject areas throughout their education.

Your donation will give my students what they treasure most, the opportunity to learn to read with their very own bag of self-chosen books.

Your help will provide the key to their ultimate success that will last their entire lives. Learning to read in kindergarten is the foundation for a successful education and inspiring a lifelong learner. Holding on to that new feeling of joy and excitement will help carry them through the more challenging times of learning. With an individual book bag filled with books, they have the power to grow.
