My Students

Mr. Mac's class is a safe place where kids are problem solving first by themselves, second in small groups, and then whole group discussions. Kids will also be doing lots of practice problems, but never in isolation. Our class is a "Helping" room where it's OK to ask for help or lend a hand.

My students come from working class homes.

About 70 percent of our students are on free and reduced lunch. They are full of life and want to learn, and are willing to work hard. My students are just like any other 7th and 8th grade kids, they have loads of energy or want to sleep constantly. They love music and technology. They love to play sports like soccer, basketball, and volleyball. They want to learn real life mathematics, that applies to their lives. They also want to be successful at math; as their math teacher I am the key for that success. We have a great school with wonderful kids and teachers. This year we have 14 new teachers, so the new energy is amazing! Our faculty collaborates on a weekly basis to help all students succeed, especially our most struggling students. Our school has a PRIDE program where kids are motivated to show pride in their school. Positive Respect Improvement Dependable Effort

My Project

My students need 33 boogie boards to solve math problems for daily math practice. I get my students to work hard in my classroom every day. We do a lot of practice problems and problem solving. Sometimes I let them solve problems on their desks or whiteboards with expo markers and erasers. They really enjoy it and seem to be more willing to work when given an expo marker. The boogie board will replace expo markers, erasers, and dirty desks. Imagine a math classroom where all the students are having fun problem solving on a board that is fun to write on. Kids don't worry about mistakes, because the board can so quickly be erased. The board can be held up so that I can quickly assess if students are understanding a math concept. Imagine 100% engagement where every kid is putting forth EFFORT in math and actually enjoying it. I can see every student being actively engaged and working math problems on their boogie boards. I could also see them using the boards to write on during quizzes or tests. Asking kids to show their work would no longer be a challenge.

We all know that more math in school often equates with a better job and or life in the future.

The push for deeper and more meaningful math instruction has never before been so intense as it is right now. Having the boogie boards in my classroom will make learning math that much easier and enjoyable. Students will feel more willing to try a math problem, knowing if they mess up they can simply clear their board and try again. These boards are another tool for helping kids feel success in math.
