Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Dr. Seuss said "the more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." My students want to go to those places and learn about those new things.
I facilitate for a book club on our campus where we have about 80 students across the grade levels signing up to read quality literature.
We are given a list of books to read for the year and participate in a competition to answer questions about the stories read. These kids stay after school one day a week, they have real discussions about the stories and their characters like an actual book club.
Our school is located in a low area of economic development. Many of our students are considered ESL because their families speak another language at home. Reading and discussing these stories in English helps them tremendously with their fluency in that language.
My Project
Since we have a specific list of books that we need and those books are mostly ones that were recently published-the total adds up. With education budgets being cut, our book club is in jeopardy of not continuing. I purchase some of the books myself, but just can't afford to buy enough for each student to be able to check out a story. I want everyone in the book club to be able to read and learn from the novels.
The stories this year were mostly Bluebonnet chosen titles. They will read about Audrey Hepburn's childhood, Louis Armstrong, Benjamin Franklinstein and even the history of the hot dog. They will learn tremendously from reading these stories and often remember what they read from year to year.
With your generous donation, you will be giving our book club an opportunity to continue instilling a passion for reading in our students.
When we open our doors in August, the students start asking me "when does book club start?". They are so excited to read! We would be very grateful for the possibility of continuing this exciting tradition on our campus.
