This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
At heart, I am still an English teacher even though I currently lead junior and senior seminar classes. I've always loved literature and have taken great pride in my classroom library. Unfortunately, since we were out of the building for over a year, many of my books (and shelves!) were tossed out in the deep cleaning that took place. I was left with two, sad bookshelves of books.
Fiction captures the imagination and transports the reader to places and times they've never been.
When I asked my students earlier this week if anyone had book requests, I had quite a few students show me their Amazon reading lists. First, I was shocked and pleasantly surprised. Next, I knew I had to get them for my students. It's so hard to get students interested in reading that when someone actually asks for a book, I want that to happen as soon as possible. Keeping the love of reading going is so important to me. In today's digital world, very few teens want to pick up an actual book. But that's where ideas are born. A well-read student is one who can run the world!
