My students treat school as a second home and their peers are like family. Because we are such a small school, the vast majority of students have grown up together and stayed in class together since kindergarten. This can be challenging in class because they are so familiar with each other and their teachers. Students feel as though school is less formal than the teacher may need. My students still face challenges like bullying and confrontations with each other just like any other school.
Covid has drastically affected our tourist thriving community.
Students are spending less time with their parents and family members because they are away working more. now that their small businesses are struggling. There is less tourism and fewer people willing to work. Students' behavior is therefore, behind expectations because they have not been socializing in a classroom setting due to virtual learning and the limited contact we had upon return.
My Project
Students need a way to bond and form new relationships. One of my classes has a history of bullying and teasing each other. Multiple colleagues have described this class as mean. Because of this, I would like to buy board games and create a comfortable, flexible seating arrangement for the students during Advisory. They can start connecting to each other on a personal level and create friendships with those they aren't friends with. I think this would create some bonding time for students and give them a way to get to know those that they aren't friends with or have had problems with in the past.
