This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Puberty can start as early as age eight for those with female reproductive organs, and by the beginning of 5th grade, many students may already be experiencing its changes. Without prior information on the subject, these students are often unprepared to understand what’s happening to their bodies and lack strategies for managing changes, such as menstruation, with confidence. Our goal is to empower students in grades 3-5 to learn about their bodies and navigate these changes with self-assurance. In addition,

we hope to engage caregivers through the provision of age-appropriate resources regarding puberty education.

At ACA, 47% of our 3rd-5th grade females are English Language Learners (ELL). Furthermore, 66% of these students come from families in which their caregivers have identified Spanish as their native language. In order empower our young women and their caregivers to communicate openly about traditionally "taboo topics" (puberty, menstruation, etc.), we hope to provide copies of "A Girl’s Guide to Puberty and Periods"("Una Guía para Chicas de la Pubertad y los Periodos Menstruales") in English & Spanish. This text is research-based, engaging, child-friendly, culturally relevant AND one of the few books on the topic that has been translate into Spanish. It is vital that all scholars and families have equitable access to educational materials in their native language.
