My Students
As a teacher of English language learners, I have many opportunities to watch my students engage in language experiences and become world citizens. Across 3 different school sites, I serve 45 students, all of which are learning English and come from multilingual and multicultural backgrounds. These students show enthusiasm not only towards learning a new cultural and new language, but also towards building a learning community. They bring unique experiences and knowledge to our schools and have goals to either go to a technical college, a 2 year college, or a 4 year university.
My Project
My students are proposing that flexible seating will allow them to increase focus and engagement. They would like to have different options for seating, first to explore how environment affects learning, second to discover what seating is best for them, and third to increase their movement and fitness during the day. They are especially interested in seating options that allow for movement because their bodies can be safely wiggling while their brains are learning.
Keeping students moving and giving them choices about their learning environment will increase their motivation, engagement, fitness, and critical thinking.
Yoga balls, inflatable seat cushions, and flexible stools allow students to be moving in a non distracting way while their brains soak in the information. These types of seats also encourage students to build core strength which is important for a healthy body. A standing desk also promotes the safe movement while doing school work as well as promotes healthy living as we know that sitting is not a great position for the body to be in for long periods of time. The bean bag chair rounds out the flexible seating options by allowing students to try sitting near the floor. To allow these awesome seats to reach full moving and learning potential I've also requested some lap desks so that students can be writing or reading in any seat.
