Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are growing up in the heights where I was also born and raised. We have a shared bond, a shared commute, and a shared love of our neighborhood. Their parents remind me so much of my grandmothers, my aunts, my uncles, cousins, sisters, and brothers.
This year, I am honored to teach children who feel like familia.
My Project
Welcome to Bodega in the Heights!! This grocery store will give my students a hands-on, culturally relevant opportunity to develop financial literacy skills! Learning through play helps students gain the social and cognitive skills they need to be successful.
This grocery store kit will give my students a real world experience to run and shop at their own Bodega just like their families do!
Students will be able to develop and deepen their understanding of planning, budgeting, and counting. Groups will take turns planning their business and running their store, while other groups will practice budgeting their money to understand needs vs wants and responsible decision making.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
