My students need board games like checkers and dominoes that they can take home and play with family for homework.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach kindergarten to some of the hardest working five and six year olds around! They love to learn and get their hands dirty. My students live in an extremely low-income area which often limits their exposure to life experiences. Because of this, I try to bring as many real-life discoveries into our classroom that I can. My students take on every challenge head-on and would love to have a science-based classroom!
My students work really hard to achieve our classroom goals, I want to make sure they have everything they need to be successful.
That includes having the support and resources they need to help them build their love of education!
My Project
I would like to request fun and interactive things for my students to work on with family members. We do send homework for family members to work on with their kids. This year we really tried to make it fun by having easy activities that you can do without a paper and pen. What we found is that just the face to face interaction has made a tremendous improvement on our kids. Not only are parents making it a habit to work with their kids, they know what they need to work on as they are now part of the learning. My request may seem a little silly, but I would like to request some traditional, kindergarten friendly games for students to "check out."
Many games have counting, strategy, reading and spatial reasoning concepts built-in, which I think would help our families teach their students.
My hope is that working face-to-face instead of screen-to-face, that families will interact more with their students. More interactions mean better grades, language skills and hopefully, a better home life. I want homework to be fun, meaningful and engaging and I really believe that by offering board games as homework, our kids will surely benefit. Thank-you for considering our project!
