Board Game Club

My students need challenging, strategy based games for our new board game club.

My Students

My students are the definition of high needs. In our school, 25% of our students are homeless and 80% receive free/reduced lunch. My students come from a variety of backgrounds. Some have grown up in the same traditionally African-American neighborhood as their grandparents and haven't ventured much further than our city limits. Others are first or second generation, Spanish speaking immigrants to our country. With our wide cultural range, we spend much of our time learning about each other and the characters we read in our texts. There's so much to share and learn just among ourselves.

My Project

I first surprised my students with chess and checkers. Their enthusiasm and interest was astounding, so I thought there might be interest in a board game club.

I approached my cousin, who is a big gamer and has a strategy board game blog, and had him customize an age appropriate list for my students that would be educational and strategy based.

From this list, I picked the top games that could be played within a class period and not take days like the board games of my childhood. For example, I picked "Carcassonne" as it requires players to build a countryside full of cities, roads, and fields while strategically blocking your opponents and trying to score points. It's really simple to learn but the strategy is crazy. I'm excited to introduce these games to my students and be the faculty sponsor of the inaugural Board Game Club.
