I teach 4 year old children in an urban public school in Buffalo, New York, and it is my responsibility to get my students to love reading and books!
In order to learn to LOVE books, Preschool students need to have books placed in their hands---to examine books over and over again. They need to be able to retell stories they have previously heard read aloud by their parents and teachers, and they need to look through non-fiction ABC books, number books, and animal books to learn about their world. My proposal is all about allowing young students to HANDLE books--many kinds of books that can withstand a lot of use.
I want to put as many board books into my students' hands as possible. Board books are made out of sturdy cardboard pages instead of paper and they cannot be accidentally torn. My class consists of very young Pre-K students. When the boys and girls start school, many of them are 3 years old and it is difficult for them to handle traditional books with paper pages, so a "Board Book Center" is important for learning book skills that they have not learned at home.
My proposal is for several sets of heavy-duty board books that can withstand page-turning from even the most robust 3 year old reader!
I am requesting several sets of board books including Dr. Seuss books and folktales like "The Gingerbread Boy". Also included are "Goodnight Moon", "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", "Brown Bear What Do You See", "Mrs. Wishy Washy", and 60 other books that will first be read in class, and then placed in student hands. Additionally, I have requested some book bins to hold these books during our browsing time. Children will be able to take a bin of books to their place on the rug and "read" alone or with a partner.
Usually our books are paperback books that are read aloud to the whole class, but this set of board books will give individual students the opportunity to hold and look through the pages of each book in each bin. It is a RARE opportunity for a preschool teacher to build this type of durable library, and one for which I am very grateful.
If my proposal is funded, I will be able to set up a board book center and allow free library browsing for all my students, even the youngest in the class. These books are so sturdy that they will easily last year after year so that they will be enjoyed for years to come.
Thank you for considering funding my proposal!
