Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I currently teach at an inner city school comprised of a majority of students from a low social economical background. Often I struggle with providing a variety of books for them to choose from. They love stories and yearn for literature that is popular and engaging.
In this library book club, our students will get to engage in an intense literature study of 20 books from the Texas Bluebonnet book list.
After reading all the books they will compete in a city-wide Battle of the Books competition to show what they learned from the stories.
My Project
The Bluebonnet book list is comprised of 20 of the best peer-reviewed children's books from U.S. authors. The books on this list are ground-breaking and relevant to my students' interests and the world they live in. The books cover a variety of different topics that are essential for discussing social and mental health issues. Not only are the books critically-acclaimed but they are also culturally diverse.
I will have a group of students read and dissect each book in our school literature club.
With these books, my students will have added so much to their reading repertoire. After reading all 20 books, my students will have the opportunity to compete in a city-wide competition on these books.
