Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
For the past 4 years, our library has challenged students to read as many of the 20 Texas Bluebonnet Award books as they can to attend a Bluebonnet Breakfast celebration. In 2024, 11 of those students read nearly the whole list and prepared to compete in a Citywide Battle of the Bluebonnets. These students competed against 8 other districts in our area to discover who had the most knowledge of the books on the list.
This coming school year, I want to provide even more students with the opportunity to participate in the Bluebonnet Book Challenge as well as the Battle of the Bluebonnets.
To help engage readers and encourage them in their reading, I plan to host a lunch bunch each week in the library for students who are reading the books. This project will help me fund this Book Club and the supplies we will need. After reading a Bluebonnet Book, students will be able to earn their necklace. Each book they read will allow them to add a bead to this necklace. Students will see others wearing the necklaces and be able to discuss their reading together. With this, I am hoping to continue building the reading culture in our school. For many students, this book challenge encourages them to read more books in a year than they have ever read before.
In addition to the bead supplies for the necklaces, I am asking for extra copies of the Bluebonnet Honor books to help more students read them at the same time.
