This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This project will help cover my tuition to the Breathe for Change yoga and mindfulness training program. It is designed for educators to build skills used to facilitate wellness and social-emotional learning in the classroom, as well as teach inclusive and trauma-informed yoga classes to young people and adults. I have my undergraduate degree in Psychology, a Specialist Degree in School Psychology and a Masters Degree in Education. My training [past and ongoing through various professional development opportunities] has provided me with a wealth of knowledge and skills in SEL. This current pursuit is another avenue to better service the diverse population of students I work with. As the SEL committee leader at my school, this training will help me build on our school & district's existing programs and integrate principles and practices that are proactive and build healthy classroom communities and learning environments & with wellness initiatives for staff.
This professional development will help me design a safe, healthy, and inclusive space where all learners can be their whole selves and discover how to use yoga and mindfulness as a vehicle for healing, learning and improving their ability to connect with others.
I am also exploring teaching after-school yoga to students and to teachers as a way to help relieve stress. Assisting teachers to manage their own stress, will improve student outcomes and even in their own families.
Upon successful completion of the Breathe for Change course, I will become certified as a Social-Emotional Learning Facilitator (SEL*F) and earn a nationally recognized RYT-200 yoga teacher certification. I will have the unique opportunity to share my new skills with the entire student body [K-5], incorporate new social-emotional and wellness supports in my counseling sessions, & facilitate workshops to share resources with other educators.
