This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My second graders attend an inner-city Title I school. At our school, all of the students receive free breakfast and lunch so they can focus on learning while they are in class. One third of my students are English Language Learners which means that on top of learning the content for second grade they are also working to master English. My students are fun loving and eager to learn, and I am just as excited to teach them this year!

My Project

My students love to read, but the majority of them are reading below grade level. My classroom library is full of exciting books, however they are too challenging for most of my students. All too often my students read the same few "exciting" books because they are on their level or they struggle to read a book that interests them but is too difficult.

We need books that have characters they love and exciting stories that are on my students level so they can grow as readers!

I want my students to be able to pick up a book they think they will like and be able read what they see on the page instead of becoming discouraged by the words they don't know. These book sets have common sight words and easy to decode words for my below level readers so they will be able to sound out the words they do not know. This will boost their confidence and skills in reading! Once their reading improves we can really get into reading comprehension, an essential skill as my students continue their education. Your donation will help my second graders grow into third grade readers.
