My Students
Science without microscopes! I can't imagine a more egregious offense, and I hope you can't either. Being able to look under the microscope and see a whole new world and level of magnitude was transformational for me as a student and I want the same to be the case for my students.
I have not yet met my students for the year, but they hail from all over the urban areas of the inner city.
On mostly free and reduced price lunch, they aren't exposed to a wealth of resources and opportunities that should be taken for granted in any community. They don't have microscopes and scientific materials available to them whenever they want to use them. They don't have science textbooks to help them do their homework. They don't have household libraries of academic materials. They are disadvantaged, and simultaneously have unbounded potential. This project will be my first step on the way to providing for them what they deserve to have as learners.
My Project
Who could imagine doing biology without biology materials? A microscope? Slides to view the various phases of mitosis and meiosis? A library to find books that a student can use to quench his or her thirst for learning more? We as humans are visual learners. So I have requested essentially three things: A microscope will introduce students to one of the basic and longest-standing traditions of biology and science, microscopy. Microscopy slides will supplement the use of the microscope by providing students something to actually look at underneath the microscope. There are basic science slides, containing salt crystals, the letter e, etc., which have little connection to biology other than to introduce students to microscopy initially. I have also requested slides for mitosis and meiosis, as well as slides of animal and plant cells. Finally, I have requested a bookshelf which will allow me to bring in some of my personal biology library and share it with the students.
My classroom currently has 0 supplies conducive to the appropriate study of biology.
My students deserve a holistic education, complete with the supplementary helps necessary to help those students who learn by doing (which is all of us). I want my 9th grade students to be exposed to pathways to opportunity for the rest of their lives, and part of that is showing them what it means to actually DO the process of science. Thank you for any help you can give.
