Blooming Scent Creations

Help me give my students a button maker machine and water distiller for the opportunity to experience real-world applications to their entrepreneurial endeavors that feature their agricultural value-added products.

My Project

Students have learned about and spent time cultivating flowering plants in my agricultural classroom. The next step is to devise a market for their product. The key term is "value-added" where students develop a method and process of selling their product with additional value. Currently, my students have created a recipe for making soap and lotion bars utilizing the scent of the flowers. We have a distillation apparatus that is great at creating hydrosol, but the scent is too light for soap and lotion bars. Therefore, the students did some research and found that if we could collect the essential oil from the distillation, it would have a much more pungent scent. The distillation separator and ring stand would help in separating out the water from the essential oil. And the water distiller would create pure water to use in making the essential oil. This all will be used in the soap and lotion bar making process.

The button maker is another idea the students have come up with to provide added value to the flowers they have grown.

We will experiment with the drying and pressing process of flowers to create beautiful buttons with inspirational quotes on them for others to enjoy.

These projects will allow the students to take pride and accountability in the work and effort they put into their plants, and also provide them with a little taste of starting a small business and having an entrepreneurial mindset.
