This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Learning the basics of blood and hematology- students will understand how blood analysis is a key indicator of our health.

My school serves a population of predominately minority and low income families.

The majority of students qualify for free or reduced school lunches, and most parents speak English as a second language. Many students show interest in health care as a career. There are many misconceptions about blood and the circulatory system and this project would go a long way to meeting their interests and clarifying their ideas about blood.

My Project

Through the use of a microscope, slides, simulated blood typing, and sphygmomanometer students will get a hands on, real-life laboratory exercise that simulates the real work of health care professionals. These materials will turn a unit on the circulatory system into a purposeful, experiential lesson in the importance of blood analysis as a part of ones overall health.

Students who see health care as a potential career will get a preview of the real work of doctors and nurses.

This microscope and accompanying supplies will go a long way to making science real and hands-on with an inquiry based approach to learning.
