My Students
The students of my school come from diverse backgrounds with diverse experiences. They have faced many obstacles and many are still struggling to find success and stability in their lives. The students of our school are often judged by their cover or on their transcript. The students of our school have the biggest hearts and drive to succeed; some just don't know how. They find laughter and happiness wherever they can. Students come to our school searching for a smaller community atmosphere that provides a stable and caring environment.
Our school serves at-risk students who struggled in a traditional school setting.
Our program is built on service based learning and hands-on learning opportunities. We pride ourselves on providing an understanding, safe, and caring environment.
My Project
Printmaking is a very process oriented art that students find refreshing and different. However, printmaking materials are very expensive and don’t always fit into an art budget. My students need the materials for block printmaking so that they can try something new that I am sure they will enjoy, and discover more of the alternate processes that are out there. I need a press as I have seen what the results of hand pressure create, and its not great. It is frustrating and uninspiring when you can't get a good quality print. I have two types of blocks I would like to use. The mounted linoleum is great for creating a stable print that can also be painted as a relief sculpture on its own. The two sided soft-cut is perfect for making dual images that can be layered on top of each other. I need inking plates to hold the block for carving to reduce injuries, and to hold ink while printing. Finally, I want to try printmaking papers to see how they hold the print. I have only ever used construction paper in the past.
It is important to me for my students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds don’t feel as if they are getting second best.
I want my students to be motivated to create and see their own work as having value. The block printing process can have a great impact on students who find success with more structured projects and I know it will inspire many students to create and get the credit that they need. Without help I can’t provide the necessary materials to all of my students. We plan on taking our artwork out into the community this year and we want materials that can provide students the freedom to express themselves.
