Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are incredibly resilient. They have been learning from home since March and doing the best they can with the resources they have. For many, that means using a pencil and printer paper to complete artwork because they don’t have their sketchbooks at home. Some have been submitting drawings on ruled paper but have expressed the desire to work with other materials.
I did my best to round up the supplies I had at school and created art supply bundles that students could pick up from school.
I didn’t quite foresee the reality that some students cannot make it to school due to lack of access to transportation. The transition to online learning has certainly been tough for both students and teachers, but we’re all in it to win it. Between zoom sessions and emails we are all doing the best we can to connect with each other and keep the arts alive.
My Project
Block printing is one of high school student’s most memorable projects. It’s very hands-on and students love that they can make multiples using just one block.
I want to help students continue their creative journey, especially during a time when they may feel hopeless about the future.
Throughout time, art has helped get us through the toughest situations, has helped heal, and has allowed doors to open that we couldn’t imagine.
I hope that through this project students will have something to look forward to. From the physicality of carving into the linoleum block to remove material to the process of apply ink and finally printing onto paper. I look forward to what students will create.
