it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Reading aloud to children is probably the most important activity for building a love of reading and of books! We have a limited supply of good reading material that can be adapted for students who are blind and visually impaired. Please help my students have equal access to good books
My students are all either blind or visually impaired with additional disabilities.
I have two children in my class who are considered deaf/blind because they are both hearing and vision impaired. The population of children at my school is overwhelmingly from low income families. The school is located in a large urban area of California. Our students ride the bus to and from school and almost all of them receive a free breakfast and lunch. All of my reading materials need to be adapted with tactile materials (for illustrations) and large print or braille to be accessible to our students.
My Project
Thank you for considering my class for your donation. My population of students is visually-impaired, blind or deaf/blind. Imagine what it would be like for a child with visual impairments to explore standard illustrated children's books. Most reading material uses vision as a primary learning component. Without vision, books must be adapted with tactile elements (for instance, feathers to represent a bird). The text must be adapted to include braille/or large print. Audio books can be an additional way for a blind student to assess reading materials. I would like engaging, age appropriate books (including audio books with players and headphones) for my students. Once I receive the books, I will then add tactile elements to the illustrations so they can be touched and explored without the use of vision. With you help, my students will have an increased opportunity to discover new books and develop a love of reading.
About 90 percent of what we learn comes through our vision.
Children who are blind or visually impaired must use their other senses to learn. Think about all the things you look at every day, such as a beautiful flower or big fluffy clouds. Now imagine what it would be like to learn about those things without the use of your sight. Engaging, descriptive literature can help bring our world to life for a child who is visually impaired. Thanks so much.
