My students need magnetic word parts and a storage case so that they can independently build words and improve reading, writing and language skills.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Learning to read is hard enough for the average person. There are complicated language structures, changing phonics principles, and sight words that break all the rules. Add to that the social challenges of limited language abilities, poverty and homeless, and reading is a major undertaking.
I work at a school where we are fighting daily to close the gap.
My students are motivated, thoughtful, energetic and kind, and I want them to go as far as possible. We are fighting against issues of poverty, homelessness, and often minimal adult support at home. We are a regular public school, doing as much as we can with dwindling resources.
I currently have a smattering of magnetic letters, but I found myself wishing that I could find letters put together in combinations: sh, ch, tr, pl.... that way the children have the sounds ready and do not have to guess at combining separate letters to see if they are right. I was really excited to find that they exist! I wish I had these YEARS ago!
My Project
This year I have been focusing on creating as many opportunities for independent work as I can. I need the right materials to set up learning centers for children to work independently while I work with small groups of readers. These magnetic letters are exactly what I need in order to have a word-family center. The students will put the parts of the words together in order to read new words, building their reading vocabulary, phonics skills, and phonemic awareness.
I am also requesting a storage case for these magnetic words.
These materials not only give the students what they need in order to improve their reading and writing, but it will also provide me the chance to have students engage in an important learning task independently, freeing me to work with children who are struggling.
It's a win-win for everyone! Everyone will be getting what they need in order to improve!
