My students in 9th grade Family & Consumer Science class are learning cooking skills. I plan on incorporating a smoothie lab and an herb lab that they need blenders for.
In class, we do not do a smoothie cooking lab because we do not have blenders.
I would use the blenders to make fruit smoothies as part of our breakfast unit and I would also have them add a vegetable such as spinach to the smoothie as a healthy addition.
I would also use the new blenders for herbs. We grow herbs in our hydroponics system. We would dry out the herbs and then use the blenders to grind the dried herbs.
I would focus on cleaning skills. Demonstrate how to take the blender apart to clean and prevent bacteria, something they should be doing with their blenders at home but do not realize they need to do.
