Blast Off With AVID Tutorials! Part II

My school is a challenging campus as we draw from a variety of socioeconomic and ethnically diverse groups.

On my campus there are a large number of students who will be first-time college bound students -- some of them first time, high school graduates in their families! What a tribute to their families! My students have the drive to learn, to achieve, and to succeed enough to get them into college. All they need to succeed is dedication along with a guide to help them learn how to study, how to be proud of their work and have confidence in themselves!

My Project

Twice a week my AVID students participate in content tutorials as part of their AVID class. The tutorials are run very much like a college study group. My students are divided into groups of 5-7 students by topic/question of their tutorials. During the tutorials, one member presents their question, what they know about their question and their point of confusion. As a group, they ask each other questions that will lead the presenter to the answer, look up answers in their notes and books and support each other with academics. They become a family!

Understanding how to complete a tutorial effectively is vital for the success of my AVID students!

In order to complete tutorials effectively, the presenter will be writing their questions, critical thinking and steps on a whiteboard which requires whiteboard markers and erasers. My school does not have the funds to purchase whiteboard markers and erasers for my students to complete tutorials on a regular basis.
