About My Students

The students leading this project are officers of an honor society at a Title 1 school. They are dedicated students whose education goes beyond the classroom as they create service projects to help others in need. It's exciting to see teens taking an interest in solving problems in their community.

The officers of the honor society have been members all 3 years of middle school. Each year they have taken on a task to help the homeless in our community. In previous years, they created "Hope Totes" filled with toiletries and helped to "Pack the Pantry" by collecting canned goods and non-perishable items for the Miami Rescue Mission. This year they decided they would like to make fleece tie blankets to send to the shelter to provide warmth and comfort for people with limited resources. They conducted online research to determine how to create fleece blankets that do not require sewing. Fleece tie blankets require two layers of fleece material that are tied together, which creates a decorative fringe around the edges. They are soft, warm and cozy. I am so proud of the maturity and empathy for others these students have shown. They are truly role models for the younger members of the honor society.

As students take on the task of planning and organizing this event for club members, they are faced with new challenges. The officers were introduced to the idea of securing financial support for accomplishing their goal of acquiring all of the materials to make blankets for the homeless shelter. Their parents and teachers have always given them the supplies they need to accomplish their goals, so this proved to be an eye opening experience as they came together using Google docs to collaborate on their letter of support for the project. After drafting and editing their thoughts, they were able to clearly express the motivation and purpose for this project. These students will be attending high school next fall and will soon be thinking in terms of college applications. These real world experiences of addressing the needs within our community are thought-provoking, provide an opportunity for teamwork, and develop character in these young people.

In Their Own Words

As a community service project, our Honor Society would like to make several blankets to be able to donate them to a local homeless shelter so they can provide blankets to people who need them. We need enough blanket material to be able to make several blankets that will be warm and cozy.

The club officers will take charge and lead the after-school meetings with the aid of our sponsor so that it is organized and will be done efficiently. The officers will be giving the instructions on how to make the blankets and also supervising the construction to make sure that members are having fun while building the blankets correctly. As groups complete their blanket, the officers will check to make sure all of the fringe is tied correctly and trim any uneven edges.

We believe that this project is important because it will help people in need of a common necessity that live in our community. Nobody should have to go to sleep cold at night and we can really make a difference by providing warm blankets for people who really need them.
