This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have a special place in my heart and play a big role in my life. They are the reason I still teach and why I will continue to teach this population. My students are amazing young adults who struggle with managing their emotions due to troubled pasts, their home environments, and other factors. Despite all of their challenges, both behaviorally and academically, they shine with the right type of support and expectations. All my students want to do well, but they believe they cannot because they have been told that their whole lives.

What I love most about my students, is their tenacity.

Every day they get up and come to school knowing that today may not be an easy day. Many things are difficult for my students (social interactions, decision making, grade-level academics, handling conflict, etc.). However, they want to do better and strive to be the people we believe them to be.

My Project

The blackboard will help my students both advertise the daily specials in our student-run business and will also give them practice with penmanship, grammar, reading fluency, and creating "punny" slogans to bring customers in! It is a fun way to include literacy, and art skills, while learning about business marketing.

The jumbo wall calendar will assist them in planning and scheduling their day.

Although students have individual calendars to assist them, the classroom calendar with delivery dates, test dates, speech therapy sessions, etc. will help them manage their busy school weeks. It also helps with daily reminders regarding the transitions throughout the week.

My students need materials to help them learn outside the box. We have a very unique program for students with cognitive challenges and social-emotional challenges. It is my hope that students will take these learning experiences with them and apply them when they are in the real world.
