Black Voices Matter: Stories where Students See Themselves

My Project

While teaching at The Ohio State University, Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop famously wrote that books should provide students with “mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors” to reflect their experiences and give them entry and understanding into ways of being that differ from their experiences.

I would love to provide more mirrors for my students to see their voices and experiences reflected by providing fiction & non-fiction (written traditionally, as graphic novels, and in verse) and poetry from Black authors like Jason Reynolds & Amanda Gorman.

Last semester, your support of DonorsChoose helped me to give my students windows into historical & cultural perspectives of Asian voices with graphic novel memoirs. They really appreciated engaging with texts that were different from what they usually encountered!
