This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

For the past nine years, I have worked at building a library of books that appeal to a wide range of student interests, reading levels, and identities. I've spent summers browsing Craigslist, attending library sales, and searching for grant opportunities online to help pay for books for my classroom library. I love to watch students become engaged in reading about experiences both similar to and different from their own. This month, in honor of Black History Month, I would like to expand my classroom library with books that specifically center the diversity of the Black experience.

In my dream library, my students will be able to read mysterious about preteen spies, scary fantasy novels, and books about young ice skaters - all featuring Black main characters and written by Black authors!

The student body here is about 30% Black, and within this group are students with a wide range of identities. All students deserve a library where they can read about characters who look like them and share their experiences, as well as books that provide a mirror into the experiences of others.
