My Students
We live in a densely populated area of a large city that shares many of the challenges facing other cities of this size. As teachers, we are sensitive to the fact that many of our students struggle to get their basic needs met. Most of our students come to school carrying the heavy load of some kind of significant trauma. Our classroom is the primary age level (three to six-year-olds) of a diverse Montessori public school. Our classroom is a safe environment designed to help us pursue our natural curiosities to learn as well as learn how to peacefully engage and grow with the members of our community.
My Project
These books will be available on our classroom bookshelf for my diverse group of little excited learners to enjoy. The books will also be incorporated into a group read aloud so that students can hear every word of each book and also so that we can facilitate frequent discussions centering around racial equity and social justice. I have found that during this time of virtual teaching, the read-aloud times I provide for my students to provide them with a reassuring glimpse of the regular classroom routines that they miss so dearly. By reading a diverse selection of books where students see protagonists who are similar to themselves or very different from themselves, children will learn that their classroom community is a safe space that values each of their identities and perspectives.
