Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 18 amazing third graders in a K-5 Title I elementary school that serves 650 students. 100% of these students received free and reduced-price lunch. Many of my students face challenges inside and outside the classroom. Despite many of my students being below grade level, they come to school ready to face new challenges, move forward, and learn.

I strive to create a classroom environment with high expectations that is safe, stable, engaging and a place students can grow.

I work hard to make lessons relevant and meaningful to their lives and personal experiences to motivate my students to take ownership of their education. I would like the opportunity to provide this experience by ensuring my students have all the resources and supplies that will help them continue to grow and love learning.

My Project

Representation in children's books is important for all students regardless of their background. I strive to create a classroom library where my students are surrounded by books that represent who they are and where they come from. My students deserve to have access to books that depict experiences they can relate to. My students are bright, strong, and resilient just like the characters in these books.

My student's lives matter, their voices matter, and I want to ensure this is supported in the books they are reading.

All of the books in this project include black characters and touch on the very real and relevant issues my black students face daily. These books will help foster a classroom environment where race is discussed openly and honestly. My black students deserve to have a classroom library full of books that represent who they are without having to search.
