Black Lives Matter: The Hate U Give

My students need "The Hate U Give" as an MP3 CD and journals to record their thinking as we read the novel together.

My Students

My students are incredible. I am working with a group of 8th graders who are right on the cusp of passing their state tests. They are kind, inquisitive, eager to learn, and always looking to get their hands on an incredible book. My students are grateful and humble and genuinely love to learn and be engaged. They especially like discussing what we have read and thinking about ways that they can proactively better our world. They are concerned about the future of our country and are thrilled to connect with ways that they can help.

My Project

This is what I would say to begin this unit, "Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed."

This is real life for many of my students and something that as I an educator I need to dive into with them.

I want to develop a unit that not only helps these 8th grade students become stronger readers but also become critical thinkers. I know that as they use the text and the reality of our world they will be able to think critically about what they can do to change our world. I think that this unit will be powerful, engaging, riveting, and full of possibilities and hope. I plan to bring in connections to written and visual media, personal accounts, and allow students the opportunity to express their thoughts and fears. Most importantly, I think this unit will give students a productive voice and a chance to become activists.

I have copies of this book to read with students (purchased through another donorschoose.org project) and as I continue to develop this unit I believe that it will be more powerful for students to hear this novel read to them in the voice and style intended by the author. I also want to have journals available for students to record their thinking in as we read this novel together.
