Black Literature Matters: Bringing Representation Into Our Classroom Library

Help me give my students a classroom library that includes the educational representation of people of color that we all deserve to experience!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

98% of my students come from low-income families, and 80% of them are learning English as an additional language. Their resiliency and perseverance are unmatched, and I want to do everything I can to make their learning environment everything they deserve.

My Project

I have been blessed to collect and acquire numerous books for my classroom library over the years. However, I've realized that my books are not quite the wide-ranging variety my students deserve. Many books I have are from a long time ago and --while considered classics-- they don't have nearly enough characters and storylines that represent my students.

An NPR article from 2017 states that 22% of characters in children's books are people of color; when 98% of my students are people of color, this lack of representation is an injustice I refuse to accept.

Your donations will expand my classroom library to include stories that are fun, meaningful, emotional, playful, deep, and more. But most importantly, your donation will ensure that the characters in these stories don't just look like me, but also like the brilliant, kindhearted humans I get to teach.
