Shared traditions contribute to a feeling of well-being and a sense of belonging. It has become a tradition at our school for our fifth graders to present a "black light show" the last week of school. We are in need of some black lights and props in order to continue our tradition.
My students are enthusiastic learners who enjoy learning about and creating musical experiences.
During every music class we spend time singing, playing instruments and listening to music. The black light show is a performance put on by fifth graders that is attended and enjoyed by everyone at our school. Because everyone attends and because the show is so unique and fun, it is an event that is talked about all year long. My fifth graders have attended a black light show every year since they arrived at our school and have waited a very long time for their turn to perform. This year my students are especially excited because the theme of our show is "the jungle". My students will use this performance to share their knowledge of the rain forest ecosystem and the water cycle with all of the younger students.
My Project
For the last several years we have been borrowing props and black lights from a sister school whose music teacher is the one who began our tradition several years ago. Since she moved, she has graciously allowed us to borrow both props and black lights year after year. While that solution worked for a short time, it is time to invest in our own equipment. The black lights and stands will be used to illuminate the performance area. The neon slinky(s) will be used as props for part of the performance.
This project will allow us to continue what has become a beloved tradition within our school community.
With new quality equipment our black light show will be able to accommodate more complex and musically appealing activities as the students will be able to move around rather than sit up close behind black lights that don't have a very long range of reflection. By supporting this project, you will be allowing us to take something that is already good and make it a truly superb experience.
