This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are a diverse group of 8th graders in a rural area. They are members of a Title I school with over 70% participation in the Free and Reduced-price Lunch program. They are smart, friendly, and imaginative but they do struggle yearly to make adequate yearly progress. They excel at hands-on, interactive activities that allow them to be engaged while learning.
As Middle Tennesseans, they face a future in which the old manufacturing jobs are disappearing fast.
Consequently, they must improve in critical thinking, reading of complex texts, and technical writing. My students are capable of competing with comparable learners around the world, but they require a new approach to teaching and learning.
My Project
My students will use acrylic boxes, rotating display cases, and carts to create a mobile Black History Museum that will travel from place to place in February. Using black history memorabilia; I will help my students fill their vast need of understanding African American heritage.
As a problem based learning activity during the month of February, our entire school will learn about African American history by creating, ushering, and managing a mobile African American Museum.
The museum will take students on a journey from Africa, through the Civil War, Reconstruction, Harlem Renaissance, and into the new millennium.
Our 8th graders will become docents as they design, create, and guide their younger school mates through the mobile museum. Each student will be assigned an artifact to research and prepare for exhibition. In the process, our entire school will receive a greater understanding of the contributions, tribulations, and the historical evolution of African descendants in America.
