Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students cover a full spectrum at our diverse campus. They vary in race, culture, socioeconomic status, and interests. Our campus serves approximately 635 students in grades 7th through 8th who are between the ages of 12 and 14.

Ethnically, our students are approximately 87% minority with 45% being Latin American, 26% African American, and 13% Asian and Pacific Islander.

About 25% of our students are currently English Language Learners. Our special education students make up 10% of the entire site.

My Project

It all started with Shirley Chisholm with two of her quotes "If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring in a folding chair." and "Be as bold as the first man or woman to eat an oyster." Our class was looking up quotes for our quote of the day project, and the students found these two quotes and fell in love. So we spent some time of both days learning about the incredible women who inspired these great quotes. We were lucky enough to be gifted some books about her, and the study continued.

So when it came to picking the theme of our Black History Month for this year, the theme was loud and clear advocates, activists, and leaders just like Rep Chisholm.

So the students went to work to pick the incredible heroes they wanted to learn about. Each student was able to pick out a leader, activist, or advocate from any area to learn more about. After some research, I was impressed by my students' list. Then it was time to get to work and find books on these heroes. We had so many amazing people on the lists, from Rep John Lewis to Nina Simone. We found books like The Faith of Elijah Cummings and Because of You, John Lewis, to learn about political heroes; we had books about Laura Wheeler Waring to learn about leaders from the arts. Then my students also chose to include flashcards and postcards, which included cards of many heroes. The students hoped to pick a card each day and find a person to learn more about. They were excited to see cards that featured Black STEM heroes. Then each day, the students would display their cards on the board in the hallway so others could learn.
