Black History Brought to Life

Help me give my students books by famous black author Kelly Starling Lyons to study during black history month! We will then conclude the unit by going to see on her books on stage!

My Project

These books will to enhance our black history author study of Kelly Starling Lyons. We will read these books daily through our black history author study. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind asI have watched our student connect with characters they can related to and they have begun to foster a love of reading when they can connect with characters.

With these new books, we will read this famous African American author's books aloud to students and then let them read these books independently in the classroom.

We will study her craft and then work to add these features into our writing.

The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in African American authors and characters, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word of such an inspiring author.

At the end of our unit we will conclude by going on a field trip to see Tiana's Hat Parade, one of the books we will be studying, performed on stage.
