My Project

I want to start three 4th/5th grade book clubs around three books: One Crazy Summer, The Watsons go to Birmingham, and Claudette Colvin: Twice Towards Justice.

These are great books that effectively teach black history.

I'd like to let 4th/5th graders, who want to read one or more of these, slip into the library (during their morning recess) while lower grade classes are in. There are quiet reading spaces, carpeted nooks, and a reading loft that are often unused during lower grade library times. Each student would have an entire week to read the book they've selected... before we meet to discuss it. I've requested 15 copies of each book. The 4th/5th graders will have the option of keeping the book once they've read it.

I've also requested a handful of titles that the book club kids might want to turn to to learn even more.
