Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Did you ever struggle with peer pressure or negative self-images? This is common with youth, but social media has exacerbated the problem. Young girls believe they have to expose themselves in compromising ways in order to be accepted.

"A survey of 325 adults found that compared with young white girls, people think young black girls need less nurturing, protection, support and comfort.

They’re seen as more independent, and participants think they know more about mature topics, such as sex. Dubbed “adultification,” it’s the notion that girls of color, especially those 5-14, are less childlike and, as a result, more likely to be assigned greater culpability for their actions."

As a school counselor in a Title I middle school, I have the pleasure to work closely with a group of young black girls between ages 11-14. The goal is to build confidence, character, and celebrate the unique beauty and resilience of these young ladies.

My Project

These materials will help these young ladies discover confidence, the importance of lifting up others, and the beauty of the girl in the mirror. We will work for an entire semester on loving the skin that you are in by addressing mental health using mindfulness techniques, why self-love is non-negotiable, the importance of being a friend, the benefits of eating right, and the power of being uniquely you.

It is important that each girl have their own personal materials (book, journal, pen, self-care workbook) to emphasize that they are valuable.

Some come from very low-income households and are used to having to share everything, so having materials that are theirs (and theirs alone) is important for the self-confidence.
