My Students

I work in an alternative high school in New York City. Many of our students are older and come from environments that did not meet their needs as learners. We strive to create a school community that recognizes the multitude of experiences and talents that each student brings to the classroom.

Many of our students are court-involved or suffer the stigma of having an incarcerated parent.

They have all been impacted by the criminal justice system in some way. They deserve the opportunity to share their stories and voice their concerns. After all, the youth who are directly affected by this problem have the creativity and the drive to imagine solutions.

And although they have drive and imagination, our students also have very adult responsibilities. They struggle economically and, in turn, academically. But they also have a profound understanding of their own experiences and extraordinary insight into the world around them. And their energy is the stuff that movements are made of.

My Project

I've noticed that my students respond well to reading material that is engaging, relevant, and reflective of their own experiences. In my search for these materials, I came across the comic book Black by Kwanza Osejyefo. It is essentially a story about mutants told from the perspective of young people of color. The protagonist gains superhuman powers after surviving a police shooting. I thought this would be an excellent way to help students develop as readers, writers, and critical thinkers.

In this course, students will discuss the idea of an "other"; a frightening unknown that represents all of our fears and anxieties about the world.

They will discuss how the book Black is an allegory for that fear and all the ways in which that fear manifests itself. Students will be asked to create their own allegory that addresses a social issue that they care about. They will work to recreate the allegory using comic book panels, similar to those that Osejyefo used to create Black. And finally, students will take a trip to the 6th Annual Black Comic Book Festival at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, located in Harlem. There, they will have the opportunity to meet with the author.

Critical Race Theory is an examination of our society and culture through the intersection of race, law, and power. My students engage in discussions like this all of the time; at home with family, in the lunchroom, on the subway, and online. I believe that it is important to show them that what they are talking about is academic. It is scholarly. And on the road to self-discovery, my students deserve more opportunities to see themselves as scholars. I hope that you will support them on their journey.
