My Students
Our school is open to children from two school districts. We serve approximately 555 students in grades PK-5. We have a racially diverse student body and dual language classes in both Spanish and French. Minority enrollment is 69% of the student body (majority Hispanic and Black), which is more than the state average of 55%. The reading and writing scores of low-income students at this school are above the state average for low-income kids, but they're still below the state average for all kids. Teachers are hard working and dedicated to ensure that our children are challenged academically and respected as individuals. Students feel a sense of community and are encouraged to work collaboratively and to also do their personal best.
My Project
Beginning in PreK, students learn music through song, percussion instruments and movement. From Kindergarten through second grade, students learn to play the piano through the Music and the Brain program. By the third grade they are ready to transition to wind instruments. They are especially eager to learn recorder through the Karate Recorder method. Students earn a karate belt for every new skill the learn. Any student who earns a black belt becomes a classroom sensei.
Recorder Karate emphasizes, musical concepts, vocabulary and technique.
By donating to our Karate Recorder project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will inevitably increase their academic and musical achievement. Students also learn the value of giving and receiving effective feedback in order to develop solo, duet and whole group playing skills.
As a karate sensei once said, “A student well versed in even one technique will naturally see corresponding points in other techniques.”
