My Project
The Marine Academy of Science and Technology(MAST@FIU), at Florida International University’s North Campus, is located in the Oleta River State Park Preserve on Biscayne Bay in North Miami Florida. Students are eager to step outside the brick-and-mortar walls and start "doing" more.
Our unique location presents us with opportunities to investigate the water quality in our immediate environment.
This year, the Honors Chemistry cohort has decided to test the quality of various bodies of water surrounding our campus: Biscayne Bay, the mangrove marshes, and our own man-made wetland.
We will determine pH, salinity, turbidity, hardness, dissolved oxygen, heavy metals, dissolved nutrients, and bacteria. Students will then create presentations of their findings, citing hypotheses about potential sources of any contaminants, and make suggestions for a possible remediation plan.
We are seeking to acquire a device that measures contaminants such as sulfates, phosphates and nitrates or other nutrients that contribute to poor water quality.
The Industrial Test Systems ITS Exact iDip 570 Marine Aquarium, Coral & Aquaculture Water Starter Test Kit/Bluetooth/Waterproof/7 Parameters and the refill kit – Industrial Test Systems 486218 Exact iDip 570 Marine Water Reagent Refill Box, contain enough tests for all the groups across the five (5) Honors Chemistry classes to complete the activity.
Acquisition of this test kit and the refills would help us to adequately classify the various bodies of water around us, and ensure that the water systems are safe for the life present in the respective ecosystems.
