My Project
In January, my students helped raise donations for the food pantry that is near the school. We walked the donations to the pantry and they were very appreciative. We spoke in detail about what the pantry is and who can use it. We also watch videos about Food Pantries and what type of items they can get.
My students asked if we could collect items to create these boxes for the pantry as a community service project.
I gathered some items and we created a Birthday in a box and talked about what else besides a cake would a child like on their birthday. We had a few suggestions for items like small gifts to decorations.
Each box contains a cake mix and a lemon-lime soda. The two mix together to create a cake. there is also a container of frosting, and candles and all is contained in a foil container that the cake can be cooked in.
The students in my classroom chose this service project because it hits close to home. Many students have experienced not having a birthday celebration because the family did not have the funds to have one and others are in the foster care system. Each student said that if the food pantry had this as an option, they feel that would help each child have a special day no matter their family's circumstances.
To make this project a success, we are asking for donations to make, bake, and decorate a cake for a special child. The students will create birthday cards to place inside the box and bag the birthday candles and balloons so each child gets 12 candles and 12 balloons. The students will create an instruction sheet for each kit utilizing the paper within the classroom.
