My Students

I work in downtown Tucson at a Title 1 K-8 school filled with rich history, diverse cultures, low socioeconomic-based families, and a significant group of children who struggle with reading. Some are second language learners, some are refugees, some have never held a pencil before entering kindergarten, but all are amazing! Since moving to this school my work has centered on creating a site-based exemplary reading program—one that is culturally responsive, based in theory, provides support for teachers and students and focuses on intercultural understandings. Systematic change is happening.

According to reading record data collected, our students are learning to read; but they still need opportunities to read for sheer pleasure-- both in and out of school.

Alfred Tatum (2011) calls for the need to bridge in school and out of school literacies. This innovative project—providing students with a birthday book of their choice—is designed to address this need.

My Project

Title I funds cannot be used to purchase books for students' personal use. In the past, we have raised funds on our own in order to stockpile books for the Birthday Book project. This task has become increasingly difficult, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. Your donation will help ensure the sustainability of providing birthday books for the 2021-22 school year. This year we plan to include multicultural books that students are familiar with and have already read in their classes. These books will be added to our inventory and provide a richer selection of books to choose from.

The majority of our students come from low-income homes, and in these homes, books are a rare commodity.

Offering books as part of their birthday celebration exposes children to books of choice in a positive light. The Birthday Books project serves as a bridge between home and school by inspiring children to read no matter where they may be.
