Birds in Our Community: Student Research Through Project Based Learning

Help me give my students tools that will help them research problems and design solutions for birds in our community.

My Project

My first graders are working hard as ornithologists as they study birds both from an anatomical standpoint as well as the issues the birds face in our community. There is an emphasis for high quality research and this involves interviewing rangers, analyzing texts and photos, and observing the field.

With the right supplies, my students will use critical thinking and creativity to serve as problem solvers and designers producing solutions that will help the birds to sustain and grow in our urban habitat.

With the camera, we can use it to interview park rangers. The Cricut will be used to assist us in making our Feather Friend Savers (window clings in the shape of birds). These Feather Friend Savers will be placed on windows to prevent birds from flying into windows. We will use the printer to print out any materials needed such as photographs of birds that the students can carefully examine to create their scientific drawings of birds.

PBL helps our students in hands-on and experiential learning. With these materials, students will design solutions and make their research come alive through habitat and habitat improvements.
