Birds in My Backyard; Introducing Kids to Birdwatching
Help me give my students their own copy of a young beginner's guide to birdwatching and their own pair of binoculars to set them on the path of becoming lifelong nature lovers and to get them outside!
I am a 3rd grade teacher working exclusively online with an amazing group of students from West Philadelphia. Though we are early into the new school year, my students already are carrying the poetry of Rita Dove in their hearts and minds, listening to the music of John Coltrane and exploring the art of Frida Kahlo while trying to figure out how the earth moves. Joy-despite this moment in time and the havoc it has created- still looms large, with her hands on her hips, in our online classroom.
I want to nurture my students' sense of wonder and keep them connected to world in ways that inspires hope while building solid skills.
I love their curious minds and huge appetites for exploration. I especially want my students to explore, in safe ways, the great outdoors and the abundance of nature that can be found in their backyards or other oases in our school's lush, urban community. Help me show them nature’s splendor!
My Project
My young students have started this school year learning entirely online. Most are working indoors, from home or local access centers, with little structured opportunities to go outdoors and safely explore nature. I am a fierce advocate of getting young students outdoors and developing their appreciation of nature by having them garden, learn the names of plants and trees, etc. But no activity is more exciting, I have found, for young students than to learn about birds in their backyards or public parks/gardens. The thrill students experience when they can identify a bird, in a variety of ways, is like no other.
Armed with this special birdwatching book full of poetry, gorgeous illustrations, detailed information about birds, and compatible with an app for students to listen to how various birds sound, students can begin a safe journey of exploration that gets them out of the house and into wonders of nature.
Birdwatching is that majestic and nurtures a child’s love of nature and hopefully their desire to protect it. Of course, students will need their handy binoculars to see up close the magnificence of birds.
Please help me to make this happen. More than ever, we need to get young people excited about nature and protecting it.
