Biotechnology to Prepare Diverse Students for Exciting Careers

Help me give my students biotech equipment for this exciting new class so students can receive hands-on training to prepare for their future careers.

My Project

Biotechnology is an exciting field that can solve many of society's problems, such as curing diseases, growing more nutritious foods in food-scarce areas, and using microorganisms to break down plastic pollution into soil. There are many rewarding, lucrative career opportunities in biotechnology, ranging from lab technicians, researchers, medical writers, marketing, and more.

MAHS serves about 2,300 students of many different ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds.

This course is designed to meet the needs of a diverse, heterogeneous group of students, ranging from those who want to pursue a career in primary research to those who are just curious about how biotechnology is impacting their everyday lives. A biotechnology course, rich in hands-on projects, lab skill training, and discussions of current hotbed issues (GMOs, designer babies, etc.) will provide students with exciting and rewarding career opportunities in STEM, a much-needed job market.

Students will learn about multiple career possibilities in the field of biotechnology while learning basic lab skills and techniques used in industry including PCR, bacterial transformation, electrophoresis, micro pipetting, spectrophotometric analysis, solutions prep, and much more. Students will explore human genetics, cell biology, human evolution, ecology, biochemistry, microbiology, and forensic science using the tools of biotechnology. In addition, students will get the chance to think about how new products are developed, scaled up, and brought to the market using biotechnology.

Each unit focuses on a different project where students learn how to use different tools of biotechnology to pursue different questions. For example, in one unit, students make a genetically modified organism (GMO) by putting a jellyfish gene into bacteria to make them glow-in-the-dark. At the end of the year, students will have the option to do an independent project, where they can explore a question of their choosing and then apply their learning to a novel project.
